Computer Internet Slow but Phone Fast? Fix the PC, Not the Whole Network

If the problem follows one computer while the phone is fast in the same place, avoid resetting the entire home network. Compare equal conditions, then inspect the PC link and software.

Make a fair phone-to-PC comparison

Put both devices beside each other, connect to the same SSID and run three tests against the same server. Confirm neither device is using cellular, a VPN or Private Relay-like service.

Compare download, upload and Ping. A phone may support newer Wi-Fi than an older laptop, so the comparison identifies a device path problem but not automatically a defect.

Inspect the physical and negotiated link

In Windows, view Wi-Fi properties for band, protocol and link speed. For Ethernet, check whether the link negotiates at 1.0 Gbps or only 100 Mbps.

A 100 Mbps link often points to a damaged cable, two-pair termination, bad port or Fast Ethernet hardware. Test a known-good Cat 5e+ cable and another gigabit port before changing software.

Find background traffic and filters

Task Manager and Resource Monitor can reveal Windows Update, OneDrive, game downloads or backup tools using the network. Pause them and test again.

Temporarily disconnect—not uninstall—VPN, proxy and third-party web filtering for a controlled test. Restore security after testing; never leave the firewall disabled.

Repair drivers and power behavior safely

Install the exact network driver from the PC or adapter manufacturer. If the slowdown began immediately after an update, use a documented rollback to the last stable driver.

Disable adapter power saving only as a diagnostic and observe sleep/battery behavior. Forget and rejoin Wi-Fi, then reset the network stack only after recording custom DNS, VPN and virtual adapter settings.

Know when hardware replacement makes sense

If the PC is slow on several known-good networks after a clean boot, test with a reputable USB or PCIe adapter. Improvement indicates the internal adapter, antenna or driver path.

If it is slow only at home, update the router, compare WPA modes and bands, and check compatibility. Reinstalling Windows is a last resort, not a first fix.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Ethernet show 100 Mbps instead of 1 Gbps?

A bad cable pair, termination, port or 100 Mbps device can force that negotiation. Test another known-good cable and gigabit port.

Should I reinstall Windows?

Usually no. Drivers, background traffic, VPN filters, link negotiation and adapter hardware should be isolated first.

Will a USB Wi-Fi adapter make the PC faster?

It can if the internal adapter is old or faulty, but USB version, antenna position, router and signal still set limits.

Can antivirus slow only one computer?

Web inspection can affect throughput. Use the vendor's supported troubleshooting mode briefly; do not disable protection permanently.
