Strict NAT Type in Games: Fix Double NAT, CGNAT and Port Access Safely
Strict NAT mainly affects inbound matchmaking, party voice and peer-to-peer sessions. Identify whether the restriction is inside your home or at the ISP before changing ports.
Understand what NAT status actually affects
Console labels differ: Open/Moderate/Strict and Type 1/2/3 are not universal security grades. Strict status can limit peer hosting, party voice or matchmaking but may not affect download speed.
Test the platform's network check and one affected feature. Do not weaken security solely to make a label say Open.
Detect double NAT and CGNAT
Compare the router WAN address with the public address shown by a reputable service. A private WAN address may mean an upstream gateway or ISP CGNAT.
If an ISP gateway and your router both issue private addresses and perform NAT, use bridge/passthrough where officially supported or place your router in AP mode. Save provider credentials first.
Choose the least-permissive fix
Update router firmware. On a trusted home LAN, current UPnP may create temporary mappings for consoles. Otherwise follow the platform/game documentation for only the necessary protocol and ports to one reserved device address.
Delete obsolete rules. Never forward the same external port to multiple devices, expose a PC through permanent DMZ, disable the firewall or copy an unverified giant port list.
Handle CGNAT and IPv6 correctly
CGNAT mappings are outside your router, so local port forwarding cannot open them. Ask the ISP whether a public IPv4, static IP or supported gaming option is available.
Native IPv6 can avoid IPv4 NAT for supported games but still requires a firewall. Enable it only with provider/router support and verify the console or PC actually uses it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I turn off CGNAT myself?
Usually no. The ISP controls it; ask about public IPv4, static service or alternatives.
Is UPnP safe for gaming?
It trades control for convenience. Keep firmware current, use it only on a trusted LAN and review mappings.
Does Strict NAT reduce download speed?
Usually not. It primarily affects inbound, peer-to-peer and matchmaking connectivity.
Should I put my console in DMZ?
Permanent unrestricted exposure is not the preferred fix. Correct double NAT or use minimal official mappings instead.
Verify latency and loss after correcting the NAT architecture.
