Tell network trouble from computer overload

Measure upload and stability, not only download

Create a reliable meeting connection

For a fixed desk, connect Ethernet directly to the router or a properly wired access point. If Wi-Fi is necessary, move near the primary router, compare 5 GHz at short range, and avoid a weak extender or roaming between mesh nodes during a call.

Test in the exact room and at the usual meeting time. A neighbor's evening interference or household traffic may not appear during a morning test beside the router. Update router firmware through the vendor's supported process and record settings before changes.

Reduce load without abandoning the meeting

In an urgent meeting, turn off HD, virtual backgrounds and your camera; keep audio connected. Close unnecessary tabs and apps, disconnect unused external cameras and stop screen sharing when it is not needed. These steps reduce both upload and encoding demand.

If the connection degrades, avoid repeatedly leaving and rejoining. Use the platform's network statistics when available and capture non-sensitive error details. Dial-in audio may be an approved fallback in some organizations, but confirm calling costs and policy.

Check app, VPN, firewall and service status

Update Zoom, the browser or Google Meet-supported environment, camera/audio drivers and the operating system. Verify microphone and camera permissions. Test the platform's official status page and a second meeting service to distinguish an outage.

Corporate VPN, proxy and firewall rules can affect real-time media. Do not bypass security controls or expose the device. Compare off-VPN only with IT approval, then give IT the time, platform, network type, error and test results so allowed media routes can be checked.

Handle group and long-distance meetings

Larger galleries and screen sharing increase bandwidth and decoding load. Compare speaker view, lower receive resolution and camera-off mode. Note whether quality falls when a particular participant or shared screen appears.

Long-distance meetings depend on platform relay placement and inter-network routes. Compare another region-approved meeting endpoint, another time and another network. DNS changes rarely repair an established media path, so preserve evidence for the platform or ISP.
