Bars do not measure usable network capacity
The signal icon is a simplified estimate of received strength. It does not show interference, signal-to-noise ratio, tower backhaul capacity, scheduling load or the route to a test server. A phone can display full bars while hundreds of users share a congested cell.
5G is a family of radio bands. Low-band 5G covers a large area but may perform similarly to LTE. Mid-band often offers the best balance of speed and coverage. High-band can be extremely fast at short range but is easily blocked by walls, glass coatings and the human body.
Run a controlled mobile speed comparison
Disable Wi-Fi, VPN, data saver and active downloads. Keep the phone in one position and run three tests to nearby servers. Record download, upload, ping, time and whether the phone shows 5G, 5G+ or another carrier label.
Repeat during a quiet period. If speed collapses only at lunch, commuting time or an event, tower congestion is more likely than a phone defect. Test LTE in the same place; LTE can be faster when the 5G cell or anchor connection is overloaded.

A sudden change after heavy use, while another SIM on the same carrier remains fast, is useful evidence of account-level policy. Contact the carrier rather than changing DNS or factory-resetting the device.

Toggle airplane mode for about 15 seconds to force a new registration, then restart once. Install carrier and operating-system updates, verify the preferred network mode and remove an unnecessary VPN or custom APN.
