Why Is My Mobile Hotspot So Slow? Fix Speed, Heat and Data Limits
A hotspot uses two links at once: cellular service to the phone and Wi-Fi, USB or Bluetooth from the phone to your device. Test each link separately before changing settings.
Separate cellular speed from the tethering link
Disable Wi-Fi on the phone and run three cellular tests. Then enable hotspot, connect one laptop and repeat with the same server. If the phone is already slow, investigate coverage, congestion or the mobile plan. If only the laptop is slow, focus on hotspot policy, Wi-Fi band, distance or the receiving adapter.
Keep other devices disconnected during the baseline. A tablet, TV or cloud-syncing laptop can consume the shared connection without an obvious notification.
Check hotspot data and carrier policy
Many unlimited phone plans provide a separate high-speed tethering allowance. After that allowance, hotspot traffic may be reduced to a fixed speed even when data used directly on the phone remains fast. Some plans also prioritize hotspot traffic differently during congestion.
Review current-cycle hotspot usage, not only total phone data. If the slowdown begins at a repeatable threshold, contact the carrier or select a plan that explicitly meets the tethering requirement. DNS changes and device resets cannot remove an account-level limit.
Choose 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz deliberately
A 5 GHz hotspot is usually faster at short range and faces less household interference, but walls and distance weaken it quickly. A 2.4 GHz hotspot reaches farther and supports older devices, but its channels are crowded and narrower. Place the phone within a few feet of the laptop and try 5 GHz first.
On iPhone, Maximum Compatibility can favor 2.4 GHz for older clients and may reduce peak throughput. Android labels vary by manufacturer; look for hotspot band or AP band. Disconnect and reconnect the laptop after changing the band.
Control heat, battery and background activity
Cellular radio, Wi-Fi transmission, charging and screen use generate heat together. When the phone becomes hot, thermal protection can reduce modem and processor performance. Remove a thick case, keep the phone out of direct sunlight and use a ventilated surface rather than a sealed bag or car dashboard.
Disable battery saver for the test, connect stable power if needed and pause phone backups or app updates. Do not cool a hot phone with ice or condensation-producing methods.
Compare USB tethering and client capability
USB tethering avoids the phone-to-laptop Wi-Fi hop and can provide lower interference and stable power. Use a data-capable cable and a trusted computer. Bluetooth tethering is convenient but normally much slower and is unsuitable for large downloads.
Update the laptop Wi-Fi driver and forget/rejoin the hotspot. A client limited to 2.4 GHz, a crowded channel or an old USB port can be the bottleneck even when the phone is fast.
Improve stability and know when to escalate
Place the phone where cellular service is good while keeping it close to the client; these goals may conflict indoors. Compare a window location, another room and LTE versus 5G. For prolonged home use, a carrier-approved 5G router may handle antennas, heat and multiple users better than a phone.
Save direct-phone and tethered results, time, location, device count and plan usage. Ask the carrier about tethering provisioning when direct data stays fast but every hotspot method is consistently capped.
