Phone Wi-Fi Slow but Computer Fast? Fixes for iPhone and Android
When a laptop is fast on the same Wi-Fi but a phone is slow, the plan is rarely the first suspect. Run a controlled comparison, then check the phone's radio connection, privacy services and software.
Prove the issue follows the phone
Place the phone and computer side by side, connect both to the same Wi-Fi name, pause downloads and run three tests against the same nearby server. Disable cellular fallback so the phone cannot silently switch networks.
An older phone may support fewer spatial streams or narrower channels than a new laptop. A lower peak can be normal, but a large repeatable gap near the router deserves investigation.
Check the band and mesh-node selection
A phone can remain attached to 2.4 GHz or a distant mesh node after moving rooms. Toggle Wi-Fi near the primary router, then inspect the router client list for band, node, signal and negotiated rate.
Compare 5 GHz at short range with 2.4 GHz through walls. If band steering hides the distinction, separate SSIDs temporarily for diagnosis and restore the preferred design afterward.
Remove phone-side routing and load
Pause VPN, iCloud Private Relay where applicable, private DNS, ad filtering and security apps one at a time. Re-enable required work or privacy controls after the comparison.
Turn off Low Power Mode and data saving during the test. Let an overheated phone cool and check whether photo backup, app updates or hotspot traffic is active.
Separate app faults from Wi-Fi faults
If browsing is fast but one app is slow, update it, check official service status and test the same account on cellular. If both connections are slow, suspect the app, account, content server or device.
Forget and rejoin Wi-Fi only after recording the password. A full network-settings reset removes saved Wi-Fi and VPN configuration, so reserve it for a device-wide problem.
Check router policy and hardware
Review parental controls, per-device limits, randomized MAC handling and access lists. A phone using a new private address may enter a restricted profile.
Suspect hardware only when the phone is slow on several known-good networks after updates and a documented reset, especially after impact, liquid exposure or repair. Save comparisons before service.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my phone slow even on 5 GHz?
Distance, congestion, mesh-node choice, antenna capability, VPN routing and overheating can all reduce performance. The 5 GHz label alone does not guarantee speed.
Will resetting network settings delete photos?
It normally does not, but it removes saved Wi-Fi, VPN and other network configuration. Confirm recovery details first.
Why is only one app slow on Wi-Fi?
The app, account, cache, content server, DNS path or router filter may be responsible. Compare another app and cellular data first.
Run the same speed and latency test on the phone and computer before changing settings.
