Why Gigabit Internet Does Not Show 1,000 Mbps—and How to Find the Bottleneck
A 1 Gig plan is the access-line rate, not a promise that every Wi-Fi device will display exactly 1,000 Mbps. Test each link in order to find the actual limit.
1. Understand what 1 Gig means
Providers usually advertise a nominal line rate up to 1,000 Mbps. Ethernet, IP and transport overhead reduce usable throughput, while the test server and device also consume resources. A result below the headline number is not automatically a fault.
A standard 1 GbE port cannot deliver a full 1,000 Mbps application result. Providers that overprovision may exceed 1 Gig only when the modem, router, adapter and cabling support 2.5 GbE or faster.
2. Check the negotiated Ethernet link
Connect one capable computer directly to a router LAN port with a known-good Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable. In the operating system, confirm the link speed is 1.0 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps or higher. If it shows 100 Mbps, replace the cable, try another port and inspect damaged connectors.
Confirm the router WAN port is also gigabit-capable. Some older routers have gigabit Wi-Fi marketing but only 100 Mbps WAN or LAN ports.
3. Remove router and device bottlenecks
Pause VPNs, antivirus web scanning, cloud sync and downloads. Update the network driver and router firmware. QoS, traffic inspection, parental controls and security filtering can reduce throughput on underpowered routers; disable one feature temporarily and retest rather than resetting everything.
Use several nearby test servers and three runs. Browser extensions, CPU limits and USB Ethernet adapters can affect the result, so compare a second wired device when possible.
4. Measure Wi-Fi realistically
Wi-Fi link rate is not usable throughput. Distance, walls, interference, channel width, radio streams and client capability reduce the result. Test close to the router on 5 GHz or 6 GHz, then test at the normal location.
If wired speed is healthy but Wi-Fi is slow, improve access-point placement or coverage. Buying a faster internet plan will not fix a weak wireless link.
5. Know when to contact the ISP
If multiple capable wired devices stay far below the plan on several servers, connect as close to the provider equipment as supported and record the date, time, link speed and modem status. Ask the ISP to verify provisioning, signal levels, errors and local congestion.
