Why Is My Wi-Fi So Slow? A Step-by-Step Fix That Actually Works
Separate a Wi-Fi problem from an ISP problem, then fix the bottleneck instead of repeatedly rebooting or buying the wrong router.
1. Establish a clean baseline
Pause cloud backups, game downloads, streaming and VPNs. Test the same device three times and record download, upload, ping and jitter. One unusually good result does not prove the connection is stable.
Repeat the test within a few feet of the router. A large improvement points to Wi-Fi coverage or interference; little improvement suggests the router, modem or ISP path.
2. Compare Ethernet and Wi-Fi
Connect a laptop directly to a LAN port with a known-good Cat 5e or better cable. If Ethernet is fast but Wi-Fi is slow, focus on channel congestion, placement and device capability. If both are slow, check the modem, WAN link speed and service outage status.
3. Fix placement, band and interference
Place the router in an open, elevated and central position—not inside a cabinet or behind a TV. Nearby devices should normally use 5 GHz or 6 GHz; distant or low-bandwidth devices may be steadier on 2.4 GHz.
- Move the router before buying a replacement.
- Test separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network names temporarily.
- Use wired backhaul for mesh nodes when possible.
- Avoid placing an extender where the original signal is already weak.
4. Identify congestion and ISP problems
If every device becomes slow only in the evening, test once over Ethernet and once over Wi-Fi at the same times for several days. Consistent wired slowdowns are useful evidence of neighborhood congestion or a line issue.
If uploads or backups make ping spike, enable SQM or well-configured QoS and set the limit slightly below your measured capacity.
