How to run an accurate fiber speed test
1. Start with Gigabit Ethernet
Connect a modern computer directly to the router with a working Cat 5e or better cable. Confirm that the computer, router WAN/LAN ports and any switches support at least 1 Gbps.
2. Stop other internet traffic
Pause cloud backups, game downloads, streaming, VPN connections and large transfers on other devices. Run three tests and compare the middle result instead of relying on one peak score.
3. Compare Ethernet with WiFi
After the wired baseline, test WiFi beside the router and in your normal room. Fast Ethernet with slow WiFi usually points to signal, interference, channel or device limits rather than the fiber line.
What is a good gigabit fiber speed?
A 1 Gbps plan does not normally display exactly 1000 Mbps because network protocols use part of the capacity. A wired test near 900 Mbps or above is common when every component supports Gigabit. Results close to 90–95 Mbps often indicate a 100 Mbps port or cable link.
Google Fiber and G Fiber speed test checklist
For a Google Fiber or other multi-gigabit plan, confirm that the router, Ethernet adapter, switch and cable all support the subscribed speed. A single 1 Gbps component will cap a faster 2, 5 or 8 Gbps service. Test by wire first, then compare WiFi separately.

High bandwidth does not guarantee low latency. Check WiFi interference, server distance, background uploads and bufferbloat.
Ethernet and WiFi are both slow
Restart the modem and router, verify the subscribed plan, repeat the wired test at different times and save the results before contacting the ISP.

Why does my gigabit fiber test show less than 1000 Mbps?
Ethernet and TCP/IP overhead, a 100 Mbps port, an older cable, router limits or background traffic can reduce the measured speed. A wired result near 900 Mbps or above is common on a healthy 1 Gbps connection.
Should I test fiber over WiFi or Ethernet?
Test with Gigabit Ethernet first to measure the broadband line, then test WiFi in the same room and where you normally use it. This separates an ISP problem from wireless coverage or interference.
Why is fiber broadband slower in the evening?
Peak-hour ISP congestion and simultaneous traffic inside the home can reduce available bandwidth. Repeat the same wired test at quiet and busy times to compare.
Can I use this as a Google Fiber or G Fiber speed test?
Yes. Connect a Gigabit-capable computer by Ethernet, pause other traffic and run three tests. For plans above 1 Gbps, every router port, adapter and cable in the path must support multi-gigabit speeds.
